Arterial Blood Gases

Arterial Blood Gas (ABG) samples are obtained by a Registered Respiratory Therapist or Physician from the radial artery. ABG's provide information to the physician about acid/base balance of the body (PH).

ABG results show how well the patient is ventilating (PaC02) and how well oxygen is transferring into the blood from the lungs (Pa02). Results are in the form of (PH, Pa02, PaC02, H2C03, BE, Sa02). These results can determine if a person may need oxygen at home.

HOME 02 REFERRAL includes ABG Testing on room air at rest.

If the patient qualifies for home 02 funding and has a Pa02 <60 mmHg, they will be forwarded on to a Home Oxygen Company for prompt set up.
